When I presented you pumpkin juice (and it was almost two years ago), I promised myself that I’ll buy a slow juicer.
We looked over offers, compared the prices and possibilities, but, in the meantime, we had more important expenses, interesting offers and juicer slowly turned to plan much further. A few days ago topic was back and this time we just bought a slow juicer.
Our juicer is mid-priced, but pretty good technical parameters. For domestic use, of course.
A few words of theory.
The basis of the slow juicer is squeezing screw (auger) (or two), which exerts pressure on the components squeezing juice from them. Thanks to this, juice gets a lot more nutrients – just try to crush eg. Spinach stalk, you can see how much juice can be achieved in this way.
(For comparison – placed in a juicer blades chop components and then centrifugal force juice through sieve).
Slow Juicers are working on a small amount of rotation (70 – 120 revolutions / minute), so that the juice is not heated. Juicer operates at high speed and during its operation generates heat, which causes the loss of some vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
Cold working and squeezing instead of crushing results in juice that retains the digestive enzymes, vitamins and minerals.
Squeezed juiceis not aerated (oxidized), which is (aside of a higher nutritional value) that can be stored longer (24 – 48hours), eg. overnight and you can drink juice for breakfast.
The big advantage of slow juicer is the possibility of obtaining juices from the leaves, herbs and grasses. As a result, my favorite combination of pear + parsley is a possibility. 🙂
With the slow juicer you can also get milk plant – but only from seeds or nuts previously soaked. In none of the juciers, which read of, you can not obtain milk with roasted or dry seeds / nuts.
What are the disadvantages?
First, the price. Slow juicers are more expensive than juicers and this difference is not insignificant.
Second – time. Juicers are faster. Preparation of juice with slow juicer for two people is approx. 30 minutes.
Thirdly – preparation. Most extruders have a small hole, and you need to chop fruits and vegetables quite finely. There are slow juicers with „big mouth” (for whole apple), but their price is much higher.
Fourth – less clear juice. Juice squeezer includes a micro molecules (and sometimes makro, if you use a larger sieve :)).
However, despite these drawbacks, I think it is definitely worth buy a slow juicer. Ability to make nutritious juices at home, it’s a great thing. A possibility to enrich vegetables and fruits with herbs is priceless.
Of course, as Maja reminds me, we must take into account the possible limitation of our diet. How, for example, the need to remove from the diet sour vegetables and fruit – oranges, lemons, spinach – in the case of kidney stones.
But no more boring facts, time for juice! Pumkin juice, of course. Bon Appetit!
